The Supreme Court's advocacy of a common civil code in India has irked top leaders of the influential All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

No sooner was news received about the court's remarks than Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, the board's senior vice president, rushed to the Nadwa Tul Darul Uloom for a meeting with board chief Maulana Rabe Hasan Nadwi.

Their meeting lasted a full hour.

"It appears rather illogical to me that anyone should interfere with the personal laws of different communities. Most of the personal laws deal with subjects like marriage, succession or divorce and it would be appropriate to leave them alone," Nadwi told IANS after the meeting.

"As for the criminal law, it is in any case the same for all, so one's objection to a uniform civil code should not be taken amiss," he maintained.

Sadiq, who is also a prominent Shia leader, added: "The idea of a uniform civil code is a direct infringement of the Shariat that comes from the God Almighty."

The board may convene a meeting of its executive to discuss the issue, "following which we may thrash out a strategy to oppose any such move", he said.
