The Shiv Sena's offer to restore the 463-year-old dilapidated St John The Baptist Church at Andheri (east) has made the Archdiocese of Mumbai, the Bombay Catholic Sabha and the Maharashtra Minorities Commission to see red.

They will visit the church on Wednesday and then submit their contention to Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday.

Sources said the Catholic community wants to stop Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray from visiting the church.

The estate manager of the Archdiocese, Father Tommy Kuruvilla, will represent Cardinal Ivan Dias during the visit, said the commission's member Abraham Mathai.  Prominent members of the East Indian community have also castigated former billiards world champion Michael Ferreira and independent civic corporator Nicholas Almeida for meeting the junior Thackeray and planning the church's restoration.
