Four persons, including the imam of a mosque, were arrested in Andhra Pradesh for their alleged involvement in the killing of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya, taking the total number of those arrested in the case so far to 17.

Syed Akbar, the Imam of Idgah masjid in Jagityal town, was arrested on Wednesday in Karimnagar district by a special police team from Gujarat and produced in a court there for transit remand, police said.

Akbar, a native of Regunta village, was allegedly involved in several offences.

Two others were nabbed from Saidabad and one from Mallepally, police said adding the trio had been identified as Mohd Mansur Siddiqui, Rahim and Abdul Samad.

The accused were produced before a local court last evening for transit remand for taking them to Ahmedabad.

The sources said members of the minority community staged a dharna in Karimnagar to protest the Imam's arrest.

Gujarat government had entrusted the investigation into Pandya's murder case to CBI on March 26 leading to the arrest of 17 persons so far, including main accused Asghar Ali.

Asghar Ali, who allegedly pumped five bullets into Pandya outside Law Garden on March 26, was arrested by CBI from Hyderabad along with his four accomplices-- Mohammed Abdul Rauf, Mohd Saifuddin, Mohd Abdul Bari and Sayyed Iftekhar.

Three locals -- Shahnawaz Gandhi, Anas Machiswala and Mullah Kalim-- were also arrested, who, the investigating agency claimed, had undergone arms training in Pakistan.

The 13 people arrested earlier are presently lodged in Sabarmati central jail.
