Muslims constitute majority in Malegaon town and Hindus are in minority. Recently, the communal spirit has started taking roots among Muslims and their tendency to trouble Hindus is on the rise. Some half-educated Muslims have made the life of Hindus difficult. A few days ago, idols of Hindu gods were destroyed. With the benefit of numbers, Muslims have got their man elected as the Chief Officer in the Municipality. And for this very reason, they imposed a rude condition on Hindus and that is "We will allow the High School to be completed only if you will appoint a Muslim headmaster". In short, communal motive is coming into play in every issue.
On the day of Ganeshchaturthi, the people of the Matamath took out a procession to install Ganapati. Immediately some Muslims started saying, "Nearby is our Masjid. Do not take out the palanquin on the road in front of the Masjid."
Hindus took out procession disregarding their command. At once, Muslims sent out messengers on bicycles throughout the town to gather more Muslims. Meanwhile, some Hindus people were entrapped in the math and they were very scared. A Police Officer arrived on the scene, though the crowd of Muslims ruffians continued to swell. They started beating any Hindu they came across. They also resorted to stone pelting on the Hindu residences. It was reported that some policemen were also targeted.
Moreover, Muslims started making another shameless demand - "Give us the people inside the math, we decide what to do with them". The police sub-inspector Mr. Pringle made every effort to calm the situation but in vain.
Among the 5000 strong enraged mob the life of the sub-Inspector was in great danger. But there is no doubt that he held up the mob till the assistance arrived and avoided a calamity.
Their next allegation was that the Hindus have concealed weapons in the Math. In the evening a senior police officer came with a larger patrol and called Muslims panchas. The police officers persuaded them that there were no weapons or anything objectionable in the Math. Muslims chose to disregard the assurance and refused to budge. Muslims are saying that they the town need not require any Hindu officer. In short, Muslims want a chaotic rule.
Even the top officers denied permission to take out the Lord Ganapati's procession. The officers are giving the Hindus a hypocritical free counsel - "You celebrate the festival next year". According to Muslims, Hindu are unjust. Hindu officers instruct Muslims to behave. Muslims would call an officer 'genuine' who would not object whatever Muslims would do.
Muslims fib the authorities to villainies
Hindus. Since they have the majority in town even the government officers
were cajoled to support the Muslims side. It is also very much clear that
leaders among the Muslims are encouraging violence. Their intention to
suppress the Hindus and wrecking havoc just as they want is very clear.
It is only befitting that some top officers should conduct an open enquiry.
A commonplace remark made in the town that it is a Muslim rule and not
the British rule. The concerned persons take a serious note of the incidents.
