Facing flak from the opposition Trinamool Congress and Congress members in West Bengal Assembly, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee while admitting that a panchayat official Adikanda Dolui was burnt to death by CPI-M workers at Gopiballavpur on May 22, promised a fresh inquiry into the role of the police.

The Chief Minister who initially refuted the opposition charge on negligence and dereliction of duty by the police, said that he would ask senior police officers to conduct a fresh inquiry into the role of the police at the time of the incident.

Bhattacharjee, while replying to a question by Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy in the state assembly, said that Dolui was burnt to death by CPI-M activists at Gopibllavpur in retaliation to the killing of a CPI-M leader Ardhendu Satpathy in the area.

The opposition members including Roy and CLP Chief Whip Asit Mitra also accused the police of acting in a partisan manner and even preventing Dolui's brother and wife from going to the spot to rescue him.

Bhattacharjee informed the house that he had no report about the police acting in a one-sided manner and said that no action was taken against any police personnel.

Condemning the incident, the Chief Minister described it as ghastly and the one which smacked of medieval barbarism.

He informed the House that 15 people were arrested in connection with the incident. They were now in police custody while attempts were on to nab others.
