On July 11, 2005, six people, including four of a family, were arrested from Faizabad in connection with the July 5, 2005 attack in Ayodhya. They were all associated with SIMI, a senior intelligence official said.
Soon after the 2001 riots in Kanpur, dozens of SIMI activists were arrested. Among those who evaded arrest was the then state chief of SIMI, Mohd Amir.
Against this backdrop, chief minister Mulayam Singh's clean chit to SIMI has come as a shock to intelligence agencies.
