A delegation of minority communities from South India, led by Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, has urged the Centre to give representation to the minorities not only in education and government jobs but also in armed forces, especially riot police, which deals with communal violence.
A press release from the Prince of Arcot said the delegation, which met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, wanted scrapping of government quota in all minority-run educational institutions and the grant of affiliation for minority engineering colleges which complied with norms prescribed by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) without insisting upon `no objection certificate' from state governments. It also wanted adequate representation to bodies like AICTE.
The delegation also wanted repeal of all preventive detention laws along with POTA with retrospective effect.
It also wanted the UPA government to grant compensation to Gujarat riot victims and meet the educational and rehabilitation expenses of those orphaned in the riots.
Others in the delegation included, senior advocate Habibullah Badsha, general secretary of All India Muslim Educational Society TP Imbichammad, and Bishop Ezra Sargunam.
Meanwhile, according to another
press release, the Union Human Resources Development Ministry has nominated
the Prince of Arcot as a member of the National Monitoring Committee for
Minority Education.
