Five cadres of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) were arrested from Jabalpur on Sunday evening. The police were tightlipped about the arrests and have not disclosed the identity of the arrested cadres.

According to sources, Jabalpur had been an important centre for activities of the SIMI but of late SIMI cadres in the city had been lying low.

However, after the Mumbai blasts the police became suspicious about the lull in the activities of the cadres. After the Bhopal police arrested Imran Ansari an important SIMI operative, the State police have arrested a number of SIMI cadres on the basis of information provided by Imran during interrogation. Imran had been taken to Khandwa after his arrests to identity SIMI operatives in the town.

A number of arrests followed identification of SIMI cadres by Imran. Sunday's arrests in Jabalpur are also being seen in connection with the information provided by Imran. The police are also learnt to have questioned many persons in Jabalpur. Police sources have also not ruled out more arrests in Jabalpur.

"We will take all necessary steps to bring the SIMI cadres to book," said a police officer.
