In the programme entitled 'Cry Freedom' (aired on the news channel NDTV 24x7 on Sun 21 Sept. 2003 at 2230 hrs IST) it was shown that there is great unrest and opposition to pakistan's occupation of POJK.
Popular rallies and speeches by the residents of Gilgit and Baltistan were shown. The speakers stated that pakistan should get its troops out of POJK as a first condition of the UN resolution on the plebiscite. The speakers talked about the suppression of the people in these areas and the fact that (punjabi settlers) outsiders were being brought in to change the demography of the area. The fact that the dead bodies of the people, who were used by pakistan to fight the war in Kargil, (the Northern Light Infantry comprising people from Gilgit and Baltistan) were not claimed by the pakistanis was another point of betrayal by pakistan. They also stated that they are forced to speak URDU and not their tongue which is unacceptable.
The people celebrate their independence day in Nov.
It was stated that (parts of the)report was filmed secretly/under adverse conditions some ten months back and is being shown now.
I am looking up the web site of
NDTV and am trying to see if they have any posting on this.
