A Christian group in Fiji called today for a month-long boycott of the biggest national daily newspaper, The Fiji Times, over its coverage of a faith healer and alleged discrepancies in church accounts.
The Assembly of Christian Churches (ACCF) called for the boycott of the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper in full page advertisements in rival weekend newspapers.
The advertisement labeled as a "Satanic onslaught" a Times story that alleged there were discrepancies in the Methodist Church accounts, including double payments of ministers' salaries.
ACCF said Christians were also "deeply hurt" when the Fiji Times questioned the authenticity of an African-based evangelist, Reinhard Bonnke, who claims to be able to preform miracles.
"We are therefore asking all ACCF member churches and those who will not tolerate lies to please boycott the Fiji Times and not buy a single Fiji Times for a period of one month beginning Monday 29th September till Friday 31st October 2003," the advertisements said.
The newspaper was labelled "an agent of the devil".
Information Minister Simione Kaitani
labelled the paper "anti-Christ" last week in response to an editorial
that invited Bonnke to prove his authenticity by going to hospital
wards to heal the sick, and by addressing poverty.
