Three persons were killed and seven injured when unidentified miscreants lobbed grenades at a crowded puja pandal in lower Assam's Bongaigaon town late on Sunday night.
Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner Ganesh Kalita said over telephone that the incident occurred at around 2200 IST.
He quoted witnesses as saying that the grenade was lobbed at the BOC Gate puja pandal.
The injured, including two children, were taken to hospitals, where they were declared out of danger.
On October 10, a bomb explosion at Ganeshguri Chariali in Guwahati led the police to sound a statewide alert to prevent attacks during Durga Puja.
There were intelligence reports that radical elements might launch subversive activities during the festivities.
Security was tightened at Bongaigaon and police reinforcements were called in to launch search operations.
Last year, a similar attack was
carried out during Durga Puja festival at Dhuburi, close to the Bangladesh
border, in which three persons were killed and six injured.
