Two organisations and a doctor working with polio patients have been chosen this year for the eighth Mahaveer awards for excellence in human endeavour in various fields.
The award carries Rs. 5 lakhs in cash, a commendatory scroll and a statuette. The awards, set up by Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation in 1994, are given to organisations that work for the betterment of the less privileged.
From the 351 valid nominations received from around the country, the final awardees were selected by a five- member jury headed by the former Chief Justice of India, M. N. Venkatachalaiah.
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Vivekananda Kendra in Kanyakumari will get the award for excellence of service in education and medicine for setting up nine schools in Assam and 19 in the tribal areas of Arunachal Pradesh, to better the lives of tribals and popularise rural development programmes.
Marudhar Mahila Shikshan Sangh in Pali district of Rajasthan, run by Subhadra Kumari, gets the award for excellence in education and medicine. The Sangh aims at empowering women by educating and training them in fine arts and industries.
PREMA (Polio Research Rehabilitation and Management) hospital, run as a charitable trust at Vishakapatnam, is an 800-bed hospital where service is free for the poor.
Dr. S.V. Adinarayana Rao, this year's
winner of the award for excellence in community and social service, conducts
40 to 50 corrective surgeries every day. Free polio surgical camps are
held around the country to make medicare available to those unable to come
to the rehabilitation centre. Last year, 39 free polio surgical camps and
39 review camps were conducted around the country, the foundation noted.
