Perturbed over fencing on Line of Control and International Border, Pakistan Army has set up a Border Action Team (BAT), a combination of Army, Rangers, ISI and other agencies to devise a fresh strategy for infiltration of the militants and sabotage fencing, security officials said.
"It has come to our notice that three attempts were recently made by the BAT in one particular sector on the IB to sabotage fencing and attack the posts of Border Security Force (BSF). In one of the attempts, the Action Team pushed infiltrators on this side while on two other occasions, it attacked the BSF posts", the officials said.
"The pace with which the fencing work was going-on on LoC as well as IB has worried Pakistan Army and ISI officials, who believed that it would become "very difficult if not impossible" for them to push the infiltrators once the border fencing is completed", they said, adding "to devise new ways of pushing the militants to Jammu and Kashmir, Pak army has constituted the BAT.
The BAT, they pointed out, comprised officials of Pakistan’s all security and spy agencies including the Inter-Services Intelligence. In all sub sectors, the BAT teams have been deployed alongwith Pakistan Army and Rangers to work out a strategy for infiltration.
Specific intelligence information available with the security officials here revealed an infiltration attempt by four Pakistan militants from Alfa Machail border post in Kanachak sector on September 23 mid-night was backed by the BAT. "In this attempt, the infiltrators had succeeded in breaching the fencing and intruded into the Indian territory. However, the BSF jawans had eliminated one of the infiltrators while three others had escaped back to Pakistan", they said.
Following this incident, two more infiltration attempts were made by Pakistan army in the same sector. The two intrusion bids were also backed by the BAT personnel. In these two unsuccessful attempts, two BSF jawans were killed. However, the security personnel, who were maintaining a high alert following first infiltration attempt, succeeded in thwarting the two other attempts, the sources noted.
Security officials felt that Pakistan Army could use BAT in other areas as well to sabotage the fencing once it is completed to ensure that infiltration of the militants goes on. "On our part, Army and BSF are fully alert to counter the BAT threat", the security officials said. "For us, countering infiltration attempts backed by Pakistan army or any other security agency is not a new phenomenon. We will ensure that this phenomenon too does not work", they added.
Asked to comment on significance of BAT, the officials asserted that Pakistan Army authorities are bound to get frustrated due to fencing on the borders especially on LoC, where work was in full pace and which is targeted to be completed next year.
"With fencing and deployment of
sophisticated sensors, Pakistan army felt that it would become increasingly
difficult for them to push the infiltrators", they said, adding the sudden
rate of success in foiling infiltration attempts on LoC had jolted Pak
Army and ISI officials.
