A victim and key witness of the Naroda-Patia riots following the burning of the Sabarmati express ai Godhra last year, was brutally beaten up by members of his own community on Monday. The reasons are still not clear.

Mohammad Shakur Sayyad was attacked by a group of 30 people while he was sitting outside his shop at Faisal Park society in Vatva on Monday evening. According to Mr Sayyad, Akram Ahmed, reputed to be an anti-social element, and some others assaulted him with sticks and stones declaring that Mr Sayyad seemed to be "too eager in deposing before the Nanavati commission".

Khan Mohammad, 52, and Mohammad Maroof, 34, the victims's neighbours who were also present, were threatened and driven. Mr Sayyad received serious injuries and was taken to the LG Hospital for treatment.

The victim, who lost his three children in the Naroda-Patia massacre, had deposed before the Nanavati commission on October 1 this year naming several persons in the mob.

In fact Mr Sayyad is one of the key witnesses in the case who has also been provided with a police guard. The guard however had retired for the day when Mr Sayyad was attacked. It was not clear whether his deposition led to the attack. One of those who had also deposed before the commission claimed that Mr Sayyad was perhaps beaten up because he had borrowed money from the hoodlums.

But some neighbours maintained that Akram had threatened others not to depose before the judiciary during the Naroda trial.
