Ten civilians of four families were massacred by the militants of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit at Dhara and Gabbar in Budhal area last night. Sangar Pathan alias Sky Fighter, a 'commander' of Hizbul Mujahideen Pir Panjal Regiment (HMPPR) and Mohd Ayub, a SPO turned militant reportedly led four militants, who executed the killings.

Official sources said four militants struck at village Dhara in Budhal area at 7.30 pm last night and entered in the house of 56 year old Munshi Ram son of Nihal Chand. The militants separate female members of the families and asked them to prepare food.

The militants slit throats of five civilians-three belonging to one family and two to another-and escaped.

The victims have been identified as Munshi Ram son of Nihal Chand, Kala, 37, son of Munshi Ram, Hans Raj, 34, son of Munshi Ram, Subha Ram, 50, son of Karam Chand and Vicky, 22, son of Subha Ram.

Sources said Ayub and Yasin, two SPOs who had deserted police forces and joined Hizbul Mujahideen ranks in Budhal few days back, knew that Munshi Ram had been working as a source for the security forces. Some of the local people, who saw the militants entering Munshi Ram's house, told police authorities that Sangar Pathan and Ayub were part of four militants' group, which killed the civilians. However, they said, Yasin was not accompanying the militants.

Same group of militants later trekked to village Gabbar, about two kms from Dhara and struck in the house of 65 year old Kartar Singh son of Sona Singh.

They slit the throats of Kartar Singh and his three sons Gurdeep Singh, 40, Punjab Singh, 37 and Kashmir Singh, 23 and another civilian Sattu Singh, 22, son of Hakim Singh.

Kartar Singh's another son Karnail Singh was seriously injured. He has been hospitalised.

The militants escaped after the killings.

SSP Rajouri J P Singh along with police teams rushed to the spot. Security forces personnel also reached the village and launched a search operation for the militants involved in the attack. No arrests had been made so far.

The militants left behind a chit in the house of Kartar Singh describing him and one of his cousin Punjab Singh as informers of security forces.

This morning, the people shifted all 10 bodies to Government higher secondary school in Budhal and held a massive demonstration shouting slogans against the Government, administration and local MLA. Shopkeepers in Budhal and Jawahar Nagar downed their shutters.

The protests continued till 3.30 pm. Later, the people shifted the bodies to their villages for cremation on the assurance of police and civil authorities that searches in the area will be intensified.

BJP state secretary Vibodh Gupta also visited the spot and demanded that Army, withdrawn from the area, should be re-deployed to prevent the civil killings.

Another civilian Nazir Hussain, Panch, was injured by the militants at Kalyal dhok in Budhal last night. Earlier, he was presumed as dead. However, he was responding to the treatment.

Meanwhile, 11 UBGL grenades, one hand grenade, one rocket launcher and 3 IED circuits were recovered by Samba police led by SDPO Abrar Choudhary, Inspector Verinder Singh and Incharge ICPP Supwal SI Kuldeep Singh from of Basantar river.
