The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today pleaded for an impregnable provision to prevent the illegal migrants from entering their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with misleading information. According to a press release of the students' body here this evening, its delegation comprising its president Sankar Prasad Rai, general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi, advisers Samujjal Bhattacharyya and Prof Basanta Deka also urged the State Government at the formal meeting on the updating of the vital document, to amend some of the provisions of the draft modalities prepared for the purpose.

It also laid stress on expediting the process of updating the document.

The representative of the State Government assured deliberations at the Government level on the suggestions made by the AASU delegation in this connection. The final decision on the issues raised by the AASU would be taken at a bi-partite meeting with it, said the Government representatives.

The Government representatives in the meeting included Director, NRC Preparation, Dipak Sarma, Deputy Secretary, Home, Atul Dutta Bhuyan and several senior officers. The meeting was presided over by Principal Secretary, Home Subhash Das.

It needs mention here that at the tripartite meeting on May 5, 2005 on the implementation of Assam Accord, it was decided that the 1951 NRC should be updated by including the names the 1971 voters.

The Assam Accord signed by the Union Government with the AASU and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP) on the aliens' issue had set March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date for determination of illegal migrants.
