The Delhi High Court today asked police to explain what progress had been made after registering first information reports (FIRs) against Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed and his father Abdullah Bukhari for inciting Muslims against the Government. Both have been booked for sedition under Section 124(a) of the Indian Penal Code.
While the FIR against Abdullah Bukhari was registered at Kamla Market police station, his son was booked for the March 24 speech at Jama Masjid police station.
Justice Usha Mehra and Justice K Ramamoorthy asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police to be present in the court on November 22 and explain what progress had been made since then.
The court's decision came following a public interest litigation (PIL) filed on July 25 by the Society for Securing Justice, a non-governmental organisation, alleging that former Imam Abdullah Bukhari convened a public meeting at Ramlila Maidan on April 21 and proclaimed himself to be an agent of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan.
Advocate A K Srivastava
alleged that the former Imam threatened the Indian Government with dire
consequences if he was arrested. Abdullah Bukhari further said he
would go to Ayodhya and carry out renovation work of the Babri Masjid at
the same place it existed before demolition.
