Left dons armour, but says it's not needed
The Left parties said that they are "as prepared as any other party" to
fight a sudden mid-term poll, though they hasten to add that they "see no
immediate threat" of such a contingency.
Senior Left leaders say that elections, especially given 'the current state
of flux in the political waters, "will not come at any body's convenience,"
so "every political party has to be prepared for them."
"The Election Commission does not announce the schedule on any party's
convenience. It is up to each party to prepare for any possibility. We
will face it as and when such a contingency arises," a senior national
executive member of the CPI said.
Left leaders say that party organisations are constantly monitoring the
political situation on a day-to-day basis and 'we are very aware of the
political contingencies that may arise and are prepared to deal with them."
The CPM politburo recently concluded its draft political resolution on the
political situation in the country in the last three years, which will be
presented to the Central Committee, which meets in New Delhi on November 9
and 10.
The national executive of the CPI, which met on October 21 and 22, also
discussed the emerging political situation, especially in the light of the
"unexpected" turn of events in Uttar Pradesh.
Therefore, the two major partners in the Left Front, say party
functionaries, "are not going to be surprised by an eventuality," as the
"contours of the political development that is emerging have been broadly
discerned and the strategy based on the likely scenario is being worked out."
A senior functionary said, "we will not be caught napping. However, as of
now, we do not see any Impending elections."
