Can an ideology make man a beast? It seems yes. Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has proved it once again. In a bizzare incident in Kerala the lumpens of SFI have turned the back of student leader, Nishad, into a billboard and branded the words ‘SFI’ with knives on it. The bleeding Nishad was later admitted to the Medical College hospital. He was victimised because he belonged to a rival students’ outfit and defeated them in college union elections. Not contend with what they had done, they forced Nishad to drink urine, who was writhing in pain. Following the public outcry the SFI expelled the culprits. Reportedly, the Chief Minister dismissed the incident that had shook the conscience of the people of the State, as a minor incident worth neglecting. No one can expect a fair deal from them.
The incident occurred at the University College in Thiruvananthapuram, considered to be a SFI bastion. Nishad was brought from Nilamel NSS College by his own SFI friends, who assured him of arranging film stars for some functions in the college.
Nishad has been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Thiruvananthapuram medical college. Weeping bitterly Nishad told the story to some journalists who called on him. He recalls: I was much delighted when the SFI-dominated Students’ Council included my name in the list of students who were entrusted with the task of inviting the guests for the college union inauguration, but I was unaware of their machinations.
The SFI activist Jayan who took Nishad to the former’s house very amiably and later handed over to SFI sadists is the main villain in the story. After the barbaric act, Nishad was threatened that he would be killed if the torture was made public. So he remained in his room for hours. But later he disclosed the matter to a local Congress activist when he heard of the SFI sadists boasting of it at Nilamel region. Soon Nishad was admitted to the medical college. His parents were informed only later. Nobody could console his parents who came rushing to the medical college.
SFI has been patronising criminals to undertake nefarious activities. Through their inhuman acts they have made it explicit that they are second to only their master in the CPM. They are the people who had justified the act when thousands of students were shot down at Tianenmen Square incident in China where hundreds of students were crushed down in the streets. Power and money is behind their brutal acts. And their Marxist leaders play a pivotol role in injecting poison in their minds. After ban on politics in the school campus in Kerala, the politicians are concentrating on the college students. That the students who have to play a vital role in moulding the destiny of the nation are confined to politics and violence is very unfortunate. Many feel that this trend portends danger to the Kerala society. This unpardonable political fascism should be discouraged at any cost. What one expects from students is only battle of ideas not a bloodshed.
The same SFI goondas are alleged of assaulting the students who came to vote in the college as well as harassing some students in a women’s college in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite the repeated complaints, the police or district authorities showed no interest in arresting the culprits. In Nishad’s case also the police seemed to guard the SFI goons till the news came out.
Many of the so-called intellectuals who give lectures on human rights in the programmes conducted by SFI should come forward to react on this terrible incident.
In a meeting held to protest against the barbaric act Chreiyan Philip, who was thrown off from the second floor of his college when he won over SFI 25 years ago in an election, claimed himself to be the first victim of the SFI rebels. He also said that though he just escaped from death, he is still a patient.
Nishad’s story has shocked the Kerala’s conscience. All political parties have come down heavily on the barbaric act of the SFI. In a meeting held in the State Capital, the BJP State President C.K. Padmanabhan said the CPM and its student organisation have become even more ferocious than devil. Public should unite to fight against these blood-thirsty devils, he added. An ABVP leader said that the inhuman act has brought severe disgrace to the reputation of the state. An UDF leader remarked that the incident was the reminiscent of Stalin’s days.
In Kerala Fascism and Communism have become synonymous. The SFI is an organisation with a tyrannical reputation in Kerala. A few years ago they paralysed the educational system in Kerala for one year in the anti Vice-Chancellor agitation. They imposed an embargo on Vice-Chancellor for a long time. In an another incident, they attacked lecturers in four colleges and brutally beat them up. Still the SFI claims to be the torchbearer of student politics in Kerala. Unless and until they guide themselves how can they guide others.
However, SFI has left
behind a scar on Nishad as well as in the minds of the thousands of parents
who send their children to higher studies with great expectations.
So the government should come up with a permanent solution to the problem,
not a band-aid one. However, the incident may haunt the people for
long and it will remain as the one unforgivable in the history of Kerala.
