DMK president M Karunanidhi today denied that he had demanded the Tamil Nadu government to take over the Sankara Mutt at Kancheepuram.
In a statement here, he said his main concern was that the centuries-old mutt should be run properly.
"I have differences with the policies of the mutt. But an institution, if it is helping the poor, students and middle class, should be allowed to continue such efforts. For that, the government, religious-minded persons and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department should sit together and evolve a way to continue the efforts of the mutt in helping the poor," he said.
He further said that he had never demanded that the government should take over the mutt as "repeatedly reported in a section of the media."
"It is against the press code of
ethics to repeat something which I have never demanded," he observed. (Our
