With the recent district-level meetings of the Communist Party of
India Marxist) (CPM) exposing its internal fissures, chief minister
Jyoti Basu sees a need to continually reiterate his appeals for
party unity, as he did at Suri in Birbhum district on Monday.

Such has been the state of affairs m the CPM that Mr Basu has
been hard put to explain to his party comrades, in public and
private, the necessity of overcoming differences. However, the
veteran Marxist's fervent appeals have usually fallen on deaf cars,
as they did at the recent Calcutta district CPM conference. A
vertical split at that conference saw several heads, including a
couple of ministers', roll from the committee when elections were
held.

Among the issues at stake was the CPM's not joining the
now-resigned United Front government. At Suri, Mr Basu spoke of
the bitterness in the organisational polls. The squabbles, he
admonished, were un-Marxist.

He added, "True, there are faults in us. When exposed, they lead
to confusion among the people. We have to start reassessing the
situation, learn from our mistakes and listen to the people whom
we should be meeting again and again."
