LETTER ONE
From: A B Mina, Puri
Apropos "Parts make a hole" (May 17), Kamal Mitra Che-
noy's heartburn at the formation of a government by the
BJP is evident. He even disputes India's oneness and
criticises L K Advani's advocacy of the concept of 'sin-
gle nation, single people'. It was irresponsible to pub-
lish an article containing such separatist statements.
The article is also full of contradictions. Chenoy says
the 'federal trend is irreversible' but criticises the
BJP's desire to form the states of Uttarkhand and Vana-
chal, to be carved out of UP and Bihar respectively. In
his opinion the creation of smaller states would give
rise to fascism. Has the creation of Goa, Mizoram, Pon-
dicherry, Sikkim, Meghalaya and other small states given
rise to fascism?
LETTER TWO
From: B C Dutta, Calcutta
Apropos "Counting on secular heads" by Nilofar Suharwardy
(May 24), the president rightly chose Atalji as the 'ap-
propriate person'. Atalji was a better candidate for the
PM than the Karnataka CM, Deve Gowda. After being chosen
to lead the third front, Deve Gowda, in his acceptance
speech, admitted carrying along the 25 parties that had
agreed to support the government would not be easy. TF
leaders complain that Atalji was given too much time to
prove his majority. In 1989, VP Singh was allowed four
weeks to prove his majority.
