THE LEFT parties have contested the finance minister, Mr
P Chidambaram's claim that the nation's economy was in
'good shape'.

The CPI(M) and CPI, have contested with Mr Chidambaram's
'finding' that the economy was doing quite well, and
said that they do not know what indicators the finance
minister has used to come to his 'premature' conclusion.

Left party circles feel that Mr Chidambaram's observation
could have been a reaction to former prime minister, Mr
Atal Behari Vajpayee's comment that the economy was in an
'alarming' state.

"I do not know what indicators he has gone by, but we
judge by different indicators. They show that the rich-
poor gap has increased; the price rise has affected the
common man severely; and foreign debt has reached
alarming levels, and water scarcity has sharpened," said
Mr D Raja, CPI central secretariat member.
