`Ramkrishna Mission is Hindu again' written by Ram Swarup
(The Weekend Observer, June 1) made thought-provoking
reading and has compelled me to write a few things in
addition to what the author has already said.
The Ramkrishna Mission was instituted by Vivekanand for
the purpose of rejuvenation of India and here one should
not forget that he used India, Bharata, Hindus, Sanatana
Dharma, Vedanta and Arya synonymously at different places
in different contexts.
After reading Vivekananda one cannot think that he would
ever have thought of a separate identity for the Mission.
From what the RKM has been toiling for last few years, it
is apparent that this is not a crisis of question of
identity but most certainly this is a question of
convenience.
The pretext that the educational institutions run by it
and the very existence of the RKM had been under serious
threat of the Marxists and Leftists of West Bengal and
the only way out was a separate identity shows only one
thing that: The RKM is no more the RKM founded by
Vivekananda but now it is populated and overpowered by
`quacks' who lack the courge in the first instance.
They do not belong to the tradition of Vivekananda and
his likes. The Hindus have never been subscribers to the
idea of submitting before injustice and adharma: rather
they have learned to fight the evil forces till death.
Is it not a surprise that the RKM which claims to draw
its principal inspiration from Vivekananda who proudly
promulgated the heroic tradition of India worldwide, has
been showing such cowardice? Whatever may the present
situation is, Mr Ram Swarup rightly appraised their case
that `the Supreme Court has come to their rescue and
saved them from a great crisis -- the crisis of self-
identity.'
But the silence should not be mistaken for their
acceptance of the legally vouchsafed identity. If good
sense does not prevail upon them, only `another'
Vivekananda can save `his' RKM!
