The Bangladesh government has brushed aside the allegations
of
influx of people from India to vote in favour of a particulars
political party in the country's June parliamentary elections.
A section of the press had published reports alleging that
thousands of Indian nationals were entering the country illegally
to vote for a particular political party in the elections. The
British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) also aired on June 6 a
programme in which it said innumerable foreign nationals are
entering Bangladesh from India.
The programme said that its correspondent saw many men and
women
were waiting on the Indian side of the border, looking for an
opportunity to cross over into Bangladesh.
Former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist
Party(BNP) has expressed concern over the alleged influx.
Zahiruddin Khan, chairman of the BNP's National Election
Coordination Committee, expressed his party's concern
while
talking to reporters and urged the caretaker government to take
measures immediately to stop the influx. He also sought an
official version on the issue from the Election Commission.
Khan
called upon all nationalist and patriotic forces to resist
such"dangerous games" to sabotage the election.
An official release was issued following the publication of the
reports on illegal entry of people from across the border to
"avoid any confusion, excitement and unnecessary debate
just
before the election".
The release said people were travelling across the border under
the normal rules and that the Bangladesh Rifles, the country's
parallel of the Border Security Force (BSF) in India, has been
discharging its duty constantly so that no one can enter
Bangladesh illegally.
It added that directives have been issued to the Bangladesh
Rifles to strengthen vigil on the border and stop illegal entry
into the country.
The government called upon the people to report to the district
officials concerned about any definite information on the illegal
entry of fake voters, it further said.
