A letter in Times of India
Baha'is, Not Muslim
Sir, - Mr. K. R. Malkani in "Voting out Vajpayee - BJP,
Pluralism and Muslims" (June 5) errs when he gives the
impression that the Bhah'is are part of the Muslim
community. This is not correct. The Baha'i faith, whose
followers are called Baha'is, is an independent religion
on part with Isalm, Cristianity and other recongnised
religions of the world. It is not a sect of Islam or of
some other religion.
Recent estmates done by David B. Barrent, editor of the
Encyclopaedia Britannica, published in 1992, calculated
the Baha'i population in 1991 as being 5,400,000
worldwide. There are more than 20 lakh Baha'is in India.
The Baha'i Lotus Temple in New Delhi is well known for
its architectural beauty and spiritual tranquility.
