Publication : Times of India
Date : Sept 17, 1932 (From the archives)

The attempts to placate the feelings of the untouchables
by throwing open to them the temples and public tanks in
Bombay are taking definite shape. A conference of
influential Hindu leaders was held on Friday evening
when it was decided to send a telegram to the Viceroy,
requesting him to grant permission to a deputation to
see Mr Gandhi in jail.

The conference was held in the office of Mr. Mathuradas
Vassanji Khinki and was presided over by him. Among
those present were Sir Chunilal V. Mehta, Sir
Purshotamdas Thakurdas, Mr Walchand Hirachand, Mr
Lalji Naranji, Mrs Hansa Mehta and Mr K.S. Ramachandra
lyer.

After discussing for over two hours the situation created
by Mr Gandhi's treat to starve himself to death, the
meeting appointed a deputation, consisting of the
president, Sir Purshotamdas Thakurdas, Sir Chunilal V.
Mehta and Mr G.D. Birla to interview Mr Gandhi in the
event of permission being granted by the Viceroy. =

The meeting also appointed a representative committee to
take the necessary steps to meet the situation created by
Mr Gandhi's threat. The committee will meet Dr Ambedkar
and other leaders of the depressed classes with a view to
arriving at a compromise, and also move in the matter of
giving untouchables the right to enter certain temples
which had so far been denied to them.
