Shifting loyalties; and a response - Pioneer

Title: Shfiting loyalties - a letter
Author: Aasif Iqbal Khan
Publication: Pioneer
Date: Sept 13, 1996.

This is with reference to the report, "Bukhari offers support to BSP". =

Imam Bukhari has once again shifted his loyalty. By doing this, the
'self-proclaimed Muslim leader' has once again proved his immaturity. =

Although the BSP claims to be the champions of the oppressed sections, =

it has given clear demonstration of tis opportunism. It first joined han=
ds
with the BJP to form the Govt in UP. And now it has joined hads with the=

Congress. These actions prove that they really do not care for the poor =

and the oppressed; they can do anything to capture power. A party which =

does not care about the conditions of the caste whom it claims to
represent cannot care for the rights of the minorities.

Muslims in India can no longer be dictated by obscurantists like Imam
Bukahri. They will vote for those candidates who will work not only for =
the
betterment of the community but also for the country as a whole.

A Response to the above

Sir,

Shri Aasif Iqbal Khan, in his letter ("Shifting loyalties", Sept 13) has =
rightly
said, "Muslims in India can no longer be dictated by obscurantists like =

Imam Bukhari. They will vote for those candidates who will work not only=

for the betterment of the community but also for the country as a whole."=

It is time that those who have projected themselves as protectors and
benefactors of the minorities should be exposed for what they are -
namely, creators of vote bank politics. It is unfortunate that the media=
and
the 'intellectuals' have done very little to make the minorities realise =
the
trap that they were falling in. Sane voices like the late Shri Hamid Dal=
wai
were ignored, and even today very few of the 'secularists' even dare to =

mention his name, let alone study what he had written.

If every citizen of this country voted not on the basis of the religion =
or
caste, but on what is good for the country, the progress that would have =

been made would have been substantially greater. After all, a secular =

state cannot deal with communal issues, which are the only interests of =

the obscurantist elements. Issues like education, employment, security, =

etc., are of concern of all, irrespective of religion and caste. And the=

politicians who have been guiding the destiny of the nation for the last =
fifty
years have done precious little in addressing these issues.

Yours sincerely,

(Ashok Chowgule)
