The Congress on Thursday apologised to the country's
Muslims for its "failure to do justice to the community."
"The Congress has not done full justice to the Muslims
and, on behalf of the party, I apologise for the same,"
AICC general secretary B.P. Maurya said here on Thursday.
Mr Maurya, who was addressing a seminar organised by the
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, however, said the
Muslims were equally responsible for their miserable
condition as they considered people like Mr Laloo Prasad
Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav their leaders.
"Anyone who abuses the Hindus is hailed as a leader by
the Muslims," he said, adding that the condition of the
community would not improve unless it started thinking of
"far more fundamental" issues such as education, employ-
ment and housing."
Stating that the Congress was not the personal property
of any particular community, Mr Maurya called upon the
Muslims to come out of their cocoon and take control of
the country's mainstream politics.
"The Congress has always fought for the Muslims and you
have cut our heads off," Mr Maurya said in reference to
the shift in the community's political preference.
He said it was necessary to turn the Congress into a
cadre-based or quasi cadre-based party.
