Bharatiya Janata Party President Lal Krishna Advani has
said that the circumstances leading to the exit of Mr P V
Narasimha Rao as the Congress president and the subse-
quent court directives against him would have their
adverse fallout in respect of the prospects of the Con-
gress Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine in Uttar Pradesh
- as the developments would also contribute towards
multiplying the uncertain status of the H D Deve Gowda
government.
Mr Advani is of the opinion that this time the BJP would
improve its position over that of the previous 1,ok Sabha
elections in UP when the party had won 236 assembly
seats.
Addressing newsmen here on Thursday, Mr Advani said his
prognosis about a clear majority for the BJP in UP was
based on the calculation that the Samajwadi Party and the
BSP -- the two major parties in the state - were contest-
ing the elections separately as against their united
effort during the 1993 elections.
After his return from a short tour of UP, the BJP presi-
dent appeared to draw confidence from the fact that all
sections accepted the fact that the BJP was ahead of all
other political parties in the state.
He said two developments were likely to have an impact on
the UP polls: First, the court directives against the
Congress president and second, the high court directive
staying further proceedings in the hawala case against
himself. The high court directives, he said, had come as
a bonus for the BJP - as the party was already in a
winning position in the state.
Quoting news reports, the BJP president said that the
revelation that pellets were surgically implanted in the
district administration in policemen after committing
horrendous atrocities on Uttaranchal activists at Muzaf-
farnagar on October 2, 1994, showed the extent the Mu-
layam Singh Yadav government was willing to go to sup-
press a popular and a peaceful agitation.
In the light of the latest revelations, the BJP demanded
the immediate sacking of Mulayam Singh Yadav from the
Union Council of Ministers and further that he be prose-
cuted for his barbaric misdeeds.
In a statement on the subject, the BJP said that on
assuming power at Lucknow, the party would ensure that
Mulayam Singh Yadav did not go sect free in the case.
Mr Advani meanwhile felt that the disciplinary action
taken against Mr Vaghela and others in Gujarat would
eventually have a salutary effect on the image of the
BJP. He said action against Mr Vaghela and others had
been warranted since about a year but, at that time the
party had postponed the matter in view of the more im-
portant task of contesting the general elections.
Mr Advani said he was hopeful of the possibility of the
revival of the Gujarat assembly and the installation of a
BJP government, headed by Mr Suresh Mehta. He felt that
political pressure coupled with the legal action the BJP
was proposing to take --- would compel the Union govern-
ment to revive the assembly. He sought to emphasise upon
the unparalleled nature of the dismissal of the Gujarat
government - just a day after the chief minister had
proved his majority on the floor of the House.
