The contention of some Congress leader at the meeting of
the Congress Central Election Campaign Committee for
Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election at Lucknow that the party
never joined hands with the BJP is quite contrary to
facts. During the tenure of Mr P V Narasimha Rao's
presidentship of the party, Hindutva had been in many
ways the main plank of the Congress. Often the policies
of the previous Government had been very similar to that
of the BJP, whether is was on Kashmir, the TADA issue, or
reservation for Muslims in Government jobs.

The worst was the utter failure of the Rao Government to
protect the Babri Masjid and the construction of the make
shift Ram Temple within 36 hours of the clamping of
President's rule in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress, under
the leadership of Mr Rao, never even once openly
challenged the BJP.
