Peaceful band against ABVP student's murder - The Observer

The district-wide bandh called by the BJP and its feeder
organisations to protest against the killing of an ABVP
activist in a campus-related violence, was total and
peaceful, barring minor incidents, today.

The ABVP activist, Bimbi (19), a BSc student at the IHRDE
Centre at Puthuppally had succumbed to his injuries at
the Medical College Hospital yesterday, where he was
admitted with head injuries following an attack by al-
leged SFI supporters at Changanassery last Thursday.

Bimbi's body was buried this afternoon at his house
compound at Perunna in the presence of hundreds of people
and leaders of various Political parties.

According to police, nearly 50 persons, all bandh sup-
porters, have been arrested from different parts of the
district. At Mundakayam, three persons were arrested when
they tried to obstruct a constable.

At Pala, 29 persons have been arrested in bandh-related
incidents. At Kottayam, BJP activists took out a protest
march to free the three persons who have been taken into
custody.

The violent death of Bimbi was a fall out of a minor
clash which followed a trivial incident at the NSS Hindu
College, Changanassery last Thursday.

According to the college authorities, one student had
apparently patted on the back of another, thinking to be
his friend, during the noon break.

But the boy who was patted turned out to be some one else
and a verbal clash followed. This soon turned into a
group clash as the two students belonged to different
students' organisations.

However, the college authorities rose to the occasion and
sought police help, and the situation was brought under
control, though both sides alleged that outside forces
were brought in by the opposing parties.

The NSS College has been an ABVP stronghold for long and
the clashes in the campus had their echo in the town
area, where the CITU has a strong presence among the
workers.

According to ABVP leaders, after the clashes at the NSS
College on Thursday, SFI supporters had attacked ABVP
activists at many place in the town.

It was in one such attack that Bimbi, who was returning
home from Puthuppally unaware of' the developments in the
town, was attacked near the KSRTC busstand in the town,
they said.

He suffered head injuries and was admitted to the Medical
College Hospital. The death occurred on Monday.
