The Income-Tax department has summoned Harshad Brahmb-
hatt, a dose aide of Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela,
to find out who bore the expenses of the chartered flight
that took rebel MLAs to Khajuraho last October.

Skyline-NEPC Ltd (formerly Damania Airways), who had
provided the plane, had revealed that one H Barot had
paid Rs 26 lakh for the trip to Khajuraho and back-

The department assumes that Barot is in fact Harshad
Brahmbhatt, and has summoned him for inquiry today under
section 131 of the Income Tax Act.

Assistant director (investigation) of income tax D N Kar,
who submitted an interim report, had said that 71 people
had boarded the flight. He also said Barot could possibly
be Harshad Brahmbhatt. Inquiries are on to find how
Brahmbhatt could have arranged for the money.

Regarding the legislators' stay, the deputy director of
income tax (investigation), Jabalpur, has been asked to
file a report after making inquiries in Khajuraho.

About the expenditure for the marriage of Vaghela's son,
statements of Samir Shah of Shreeji Decorators & Hirers,
who decorated the mandap, and Rupjibhai Purohit, the
caterer, have been recorded.

Shah said he had provided all services free of cost and
claimed that only Rs 48,000 had been paid for labour.
Purohit claimed that he had charged only Rs 30,000 at the
rate of Rs 3 per person for cooking and serving.

The food and firewood had been provided by Vaghela. Kar
said inquiries are on with Gujarat University, which had
let the Dadabhai Na Pagla plot for the wedding of Vaghe-
la's son. Also, people who arranged for photography and
videography, and printed the wedding cards are being
investigated.

Kar said, however. that investigation had not begun into
the money spent by Vaghela for his August 20 Mahasammelan
at Ramlila Grounds in Ahmedabad. This would take time as
it had been officially notified only on October 29.

Regarding the expenses m keeping legislators in a five-
star hotel in Diu, the matter had been referred to the
additional director Income Tax, Jamnagar to inquire and
report the matter to the Ahmedabad office.
