Terming the United Front regime as the "most disoriented", the BJP
chief Mr L K Advani today predicted mid-term elections by the
year-end.

Addressing a news conference, he said the party was gearing itself
to face fresh elections as the UF government was unlikely to last
beyond 1997 and the present fractured Lok Sabha was unable to
produce a stable government even if the Congress (I) were to emerge
as the single largest party.

Mr Advani said the BJP national council will be having a three-day
session in Thiruvananthapuram to chalk up party's strategy to
prepare for the polls.

Directions have already been given to the state party units to be
on the alert to face general elections, he said.

The BJP chief dismissed speculations on the Congress (I) plans to
form the government at the Centre after withdrawing support to the
UF government.

"It is a mere wishful thinking," he said pointing out that the
gameplan of engineering a split within the Janata Dal and securing
the support of Tamil Maanila Congress would not materialise.

Though the Congress (I) was eager to topple the UF government,
which itself was "continuously on the verge of collapse," the party
was caught in a classic "Catch-22" situation as it was unable to
muster the requisite numbers nor summon the courage to face
elections.

If criticising the UF regime, extending periodic warnings and
coming round to continuing its support put the Congress (1) in an
unenviable position, the Deve Gowda government was totally
directionless besides being unable to manage the contradictions
within the 13-party coalition.

Strongly defending judicial activism, he said it was the direct
offshoot of executive inertia and the corruption in the rulers. BJP
is the only party which has extended its full support to judicial
activism, he said adding that the party would bound to emerge
victorious at the next round of hustings.

"Having grown phenomenally, we are trying to consolidate ourselves
and gain new ground in the south besides allies," he said.

Mr Advani said the internal crisis faced by the party in Rajashthan
would he resolved within the next couple of days.

Refusing to spell out details, he said the developments that were
witnessed in Gujarat and Rajasthan were part of the impact of
"environmental pollution" in the country's political situation.

The BJP was not immune to the pernious influences despite the best
efforts to curb such tendencies, he said.
