A forthcoming book on Subhash Chandra Bose by M N Sathyarthy - a
veteran Communist who was once closely associated with Bhagat Singh
and Netaji - to be released by the publication wing of the
Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) is likely to cause a flutter in
Communist circles and may generate political controversy.
The book, which deals with the alleged machinations and political
intrigues by Gandhiji and Nehru to oust Subash Chandra Bose from
the Congress may trigger off a political controversy.
The manuscript of the book titled Netajiyude katha (Stories about
Netaji) being printed by Kurukshetra publishers was gathering dust
in the bookshelf of the author for the past 20 years since it was
rejected by all publishers to whom it was sent by the author.
Frustrated, he gave up his attempts to get the book published.
The octogenarian M N Sathyarthy has been a contributor to Communist
publications in the State - both the Communist Party of India (CPI)
and the Communist Party of India (Marxists) having translated
several Bengali books, including novels, into Malayalam ever since
he settled down here in the late '40s.
"The manuscript was returned by all publishers. But recently some
people from a publishing ,house asked for the manuscripts; I then
gave it to them without even enquiring about their political or
ideological leanings," said Sathyarthy. "But my friends now
criticise me for having handed over the manuscripts," he said.
The book by Sathyarthy may be as interesting as the author himself
who is not in the habit of giving interviews to journalists. He
never spoke in any public meeting either. "Sathyarthy is a bona
fide Communist," said Prof M P Sreedharan, former treasurer of the
Indian History Congress.
Son of Moorkoth Narayanan of Thalassery, Sathyarthy had his
education in Lahore since his father was a Government officer
there. He was arrested in Lahore in connection with the shooting
down of the Chancellor at the convocation of the Lahore University
in 1931. Though it was one of his classmates who had shot the
Chancellor, Sathyarthy was wanted by the police in connection with
the incident and so he escaped to Calcutta. He returned to Lahore
again but was arrested by the police. He escaped from jail in 1934
and later settled his scores with the police officer who implicated
him in the case, narrates Sreedharan.
He then joined the Hindustan Revolutionary Army and worked closely
with Bhagat Singh and Atma Ram. He had also worked in a Bengali
weekly brought out by the Forward Bloc with Subash Chandra Bose as
the editor.
Sathyarthy addressed a Netaji memorial meet here last week where he
described at length Netaji's journey from Calcutta to Germany
through kabul.
