The 55-day Swarna Jayanti Rath Yatra by Bharatiya Janata Party President L K
Advani, would be flagged off from August Kranti Maidan on May 18 in Mumbai,
informed the BJP's All-India General Secretary, Pramod Mahajan.
Speaking to newsmen here on Friday, Mahajan said that the main purpose of the
yatra is to create an atmosphere which the country needs for celebrating its 50
years of Independence.
Mahajan lamented that despite so many months having lapsed, all the political
parties and various other voluntary organisations have failed to create a picture
that the country was in the midst of celebrating its golden jubilee of
Independence. Referring to the staging of the one-day cricket tournament, the
Independence Cup now in progress, he added that games introduced to this country
by colonial powers cannot recreate the atmosphere of Independence.
The rath yatra, which will traverse through 21 states covering 15,000 Kms, is
being titled as "Aaiye Inke Sapno Ka Bharat Sakar Karein".
The yatra will be flagged off from August Kranti Maidan where BJP's Leader of
Opposition in Lok Sabha, Atal Behari Vajpayee will address a gathering.
Thereafter the yatra, which will leave the city, will culminate in a rally on July
10 at Lal Killa Maidan, Delhi. In the course of the yatra, Advani is expected to
address over 250 major rallies, 5000 odd small meetings and in the process address
over two crores of the population, Mahajan added.
In a bid to rekindle national fervour, the route of Advani's yatra will go through
cities where memorials of national leaders are housed. Cellular Jail at Andaman
and Nicobar, Gandhiji's ashram at Porbandar, Jalianwala Bang, etc, will be covered
during the yatra.
The yatra will pass through the state twice, first on May 18 and 19, covering
cities like Pune, Khopoli, Talegaon and Satara. When the yatra enters the state
for the second time on June 3 and 4, it will cover the cities of Nanded, Parbhani,
Aurangabad, Dhule and then proceed towards Gujarat.
Work on the vehicle to be used for the yatra is being currently being carried out
in a city garage. Giving details of the decorations involved, Mahajan stated that
one side of the rath will don a cut-out of Gandhiji's famous Dandi march.
On the other side a cut-out of a holy fire giving birth to all the prominent
freedom fighters between 1857 to 1947 is to be painted.
