The six-month old Shankar Sinh Vaghela. Government in Gujarat is in trouble with
the threat of imminent withdrawal of Congress support.

The Congress High Command is being approached for permission to withdraw support
in the light of a unanimity at Tuesday's meeting of the party MLAs in Gandhinagar
that the Congress was losing its base because of alleged machinations by Vaghela.

Former Chief Minister Chhabildas Mehta, who led the attack on Vaghela at the
meeting, said the state leaders would be calling on Congress President Sitaram
Kesri in all probability this Saturday to seek permission to withdraw support.

He said 11 of the 15 speakers at Tuesday's meeting wanted withdrawal of support
while only two were neutral and two pleaded not to act in haste until an
alternative was possible as they disfavoured fresh elections which may bring back
the BJP to power.

Mehta said even persons like former Deputy Chief minister C D Patel, who had till
now been in favour of supporting the Vaghela government, wanted withdrawal of
support. Those belonging to Madhavsinh Solanki also felt Vaghela was cutting into
the Congress base.

Mehta, who belongs to the erstwhile Janata Dal(G), however vehemently denied
reports in a section of the press that he was hobnobbing with the BJP for
formation of a BJP-led government by splitting the Congress.
