Mannheim, Germany: Former world number one tennis player Steffi Graf will
save millions of marks in church tax after leaving the Roman Catholic
Church, Sueddeutscher Rundfunk radio reported on Tuesday. It said Graf's
home town Bruehl, and the archdiocese of Freiburg, would now lose hundreds
of thousands of marks a year. Under agreements between the government and
churches, employed people pay a church tax taken directly from their pay
and given to the different denominations. She was to pay between $166,666
and 277,777 a year since 1990, but only one-third was paid. (AFP)
