Working on the premise that the ruling United Front coalition Government
headed by Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral is bound to fall apart sooner
than later, the BJP will be formulating its strategy to cross the hump in a
possible mid term poll at its two-day National Executive meeting beginning
in the capital on Saturday.
The two-day deliberations will centre around ways and means to conquer
newer areas in the South and the East to enable the BJP and its allies
secure power at the Centre in any elections held in future. That the BJP
was not in search of new allies was made clear by party President L K
Advani during the course of his two month-long Swarn Jayanti Rath Yatra.
Advani, back in the capital after a 15,000 km-long journey across the
length and breadth of the country, is expected to interpret the latest
political developments in a pep talk to the party's National Executive
members and special invitees to prepare them for the next general elections.
The two-day meet would be drafting its political strategy, with fight
against corruption as the central theme, against the backdrop of Advani's
successful Swarn Jayanti Rath Yatra, during the course of which the BJP
registered its presence even in the Communist strongholds of Kerala and
West Bengal.
Essentially, said a senior BJP leader, the strategy will hinge upon follow
up action on the ground to cash in on the gains made by the party on
account of the Swarn Jayanti Rath Yatra.
Plans for renewed and sustained mass contact programmes, the party
leadership hopes, will find acceptance from the delegates to the National
Executive meet.
There will be two main resolutions, one on contemporary political situation
and the other on the economic situation in the country, that the executive
will adopt. Another one on defence preparedness of the nation in the wake
of Pakistani missile programme is also likely, said BJP Vice President
Krishanlal Sharma.
The National Executive meet will be held at Parliament House annexe on
Saturday and Sunday. Advani in his opening remarks will be launching an
all-out attack on corruption as symbolised by Bihar Chief Minister Laloo
Prasad Yadav and his involvement in the multi-crore animal husbandry scandal.
Advani believes that corruption will be the most potent of issues that will
dominate. the next general elections, whenever they are held.
However, an item of utmost urgency for the BJP and the National Executive
is the one pertaining to the vice presidential poll slated for August 16.
The national executive will be deliberating on this issue as well.
In all probability, the Central Parliamentary Board of the party may hold a
meeting to finalise the party's strategy for the vice presidential poll.
Finalisation of either its candidate or whom the BJP would back will be
decided by Sunday, party sources said.
The last date of filing nominations for the Vice President poll is July 29.
As per indications from the BJP, it is likely to endorse the candidature of
former Punjab Chief Minister and senior Akali Dal leader Surjit Singh
Barnala for the Vice President's post. BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee has
already hinted his party's support to Barnala's candidature.
