Be Malayalee, love Malayalam. That seems to be Kerala chief minister E.K.
Nayanar's motto. Participants at the recently concluded chief minister's
conference in New Delhi were surprised at the disdain the minister showed
towards Hindi. The veteran Marxist leader refused to accept the Hindi
transcript of the speech delivered by Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar
Chamling. When the lady distributing a copy of the speech requested the
Kerala chief minister to accept the transcript for the record, he flung the
sheets. Chamling, who was sitting behind Nayanar, watched the drama but
chose not to protest since Nayanar was senior to him. But upset he visibly
was. Perhaps Nayanar needs to be told that language is for bridging
barriers and not for building walls.
