Prominent artist M. F. Husain was interrogated by the police on
Wednesday in connection with the controversy over his nude painting
of Goddess Saraswati, police sources said. The police spoke to the
artist for over two hours at a private room in a south Mumbai
hotel, they added.

Joint police commissioner (crime) R. S. Sharma told this newspaper
that Mr Husain's statements were being recorded and interrogations
are likely to continue till Thursday. "The police will take a
decision regarding the artist's arrest only after recording his
statement," Mr Sharma added.

Mr Husain's return to the city on Tuesday was a quiet, unheralded
one. Though he has a house at Cuffe Parade, well placed sources
revealed that he is a present staying at a city hotel.

The city branch of the CID, it may be recalled, registered cases
under Section 295 A and 153 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)
against Mr Husain last year, following a written complaint by state
minister for culture Pramod Navalkar. The police charged him with
creating enmity between different groups of people on grounds of
religion and for outraging religious feelings.

Mr Husain issued a written statement from London in October last
year, denying any intention to injure religious feelings or create
dissatisfaction between communities. He also apologised if his work
had hurt anyone's sentiments.
