The New York Post newspaper printed an apology yesterday for offending Muslims who were angered by a cartoon of a knife labelled terrorism plunged into the Koran with blood dripping out.
The paper said the comic, reprinted from the Los Angeles Times, was intended to show that terrorism in the name of Islam soils the holy book.

Muslim kiosk owners reportedly refused to sell the local tabloid, because they were upset by the drawing that they felt insulted their religious beliefs.

The Post received a bomb threat following the cartoon's publication, causing police to station officers around the paper's midtown headquarters.

The Koran advocates peace, cartoonist Michael Ramirez said.

The drawing was published on Friday, several days after Islamic terrorists killed 58 tourists in Egypt. Ramirez called it a literal interpretation of the events.

The paper's apology yesterday said the cartoon inspired a number of complaints from people who misinterpreted it as an attack on the Koran.... It was intended to show that terrorism in the name of Islam soils the Koran.

It was never intended to defame the Koran or Islam, the paper said.
