It is understood that Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi had
entrusted a reputed pollster to conduct an extensive opinion poll
in the state. He has decided that the results of the survey
would be published by the daily owned by DMK. But when the
results came, he just stopped the publication. Why,? Because
the opinion poll results were not politically suitable. DMK
topped with 32.7 per cent vote and surprisingly, BJP stood second
with 17.4 per cent. BJP's figure was a little higher than that
of AIADMK and TMC. Other parties were far behind. AIADMK leader
Jayalalitha, too had got an opinion poll conducted through the
same company. Apart from other things, the questions regarding
BJP S standing in the state and awareness about it as well as the
popularity of its leader A B Vajpayee were asked in the survey.
The results were surprising for her. Only a couple of days
before, when BJP approached her for electoral understanding, she
only agreed for tacit seat adjustments. When opinion poll
results came to her in mid-December, she immediately changed her
mind and rang L K Advani up for an open alliance.
