In an unusually hard-hitting attack on Sonia Gandhi on Saturday,
the Samajwadi Party virtually called her a liar and declared that
her statement on Babri Masjid demolition was a pack of lies.
Leader of the Opposition in the UP Legislative Council Ahmad
Hasan said that Sonia Gandhi's statement that her late husband
Rajiv Gandhi was determined to protect the mosque even at the
cost of his life as "far from the truth, mischievous and
misleading". President of the party's state unit Ram Saran Das
was also present on the occasion.
They told newsmen that their observation should be construed as
the party's view and there could not be a compromise on the issue
on any count. Although SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav was away
>from here in his home town Etawah, the two leaders are believed
to have issued the statement after consulting him before his
departure in the morning.
Incidentally, the discordent note struk by the SP here is In
sharp contrast to the praise showered on Ms Gandhi and her him
band Rajiv Gandhi by none other than Mulayam Singh Yadav himself
on Thursday. Mr Yadav had gone to the extent of saying that he
had high regard and respect for both Ms Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi
who was the first to recognise him as a champion of secularism in
the country.
However, Ms Gandhi's public observation, particularly in a Muslim-
dominated city like Hyderabad, is seen as counterproductive by
the SP for its poll prospects in next month's elections.
