The BJP said on Wednesday that Uttar Pradesh governor Romesh
Bhandari was party to a "political conspiracy" to remove the
Kalyan Singh government.

Party general secretary Venkaiah Naidu said Mr Bhandari's actions
in dismissing the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh had shown that
he had "acted at the behest of a political party" to facilitate
rigging in Sambhal and several other constituencies in the state
during the second phase of polling on February 22.

"The Congress and the Samajwadi Party sent Mr Bhandari to Uttar
Pradesh as the governor after he unsuccessfully contested Lok
Sabha election from New Delhi. Now, he is trying to repay the
Samajwadi chief, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav," Mr Naidu said.

"The idea behind the dismissal was to ensure rigging in the polls
as the mood was against the Samajwadis and the Congress. The
governor has murdered democracy and he has acted like an ordinary
political worker," he said. "The conspiracy in Lucknow failed
but these parties want a repetition of the conspiracy at the
Centre," he said.

Mr Naidu said President K.R. Narayanan's letter to the Prime
Minister seeking Mr I.K. Gujral's advice on the Uttar Pradesh
issue was a clear indication that the, "President had lost
confidence in the governor."

"The Prime Minister has reportedly advised Mr Bhandari to resign
on his own, but this man isn't going to resign. He will have to
he removed." he said.

"The events of the last few days in Uttar Pradesh have
highlighted the dangers of a hung Assembly or Parliament. The
events have emphasised the need for a decisive mandate for the
BJP's stability, plank. The BJP asks the people to vote
stability, ability, security and probity during the last phase of
the polls," Mr Naidu said.

The United Front government, propped up by the Congress, has led
to economic ruination, social tensions and threats to national
security, he said. "Surely, the people will no longer allow such
opportunistic alliances to come to power in Delhi," he said.

The BJP has urged the Election Commission to order repoll in 181
polling stations in the Sambhal Lok Sabha constituency where
Samajwadi Party workers had resorted to rigging, false voting and
booth capturing, Mr Naidu said. Displaying ballot papers from
Sambhal, he said there was "free for all" in the constituency as
armed SP workers had run riot.

"We spoke to election commissioner G.V.G. Krishnamurthy and
showed him the ballot papers which were found on the streets.
There is also visual evidence of the widespread rigging in the
constituency," he said. "The unholy alliance between the
Congress and the UF is responsible for the recent terrorist
attacks at Coimbatore," Mr Naidu said.
