The leftist government in Kerala began discussions with officials
and legal experts on whether or not to ban some extremist
organisations. The move comes in the wake of the frequent forays
of the Tamil Nadu police into Kerala's border districts in search
of Islamic fundamentalists behind the Coimbatore blasts,
Chief minister E.K. Nayanar held discussions with the
intelligence bureau officials to assess the threat posed by
religious extremism in the state. The LF government, sources
said, has now begun to evince concern at the growing extremism as
the BJP-led government at the Centre is reportedly watching the
state's "inertia" in containing extremist outfits.
The TOINS found out that the ban is not favoured by many as the
extremists have floated a number of underground outfits with
different names. They change the names overnight and escape the
Law when ban is clamped.
The TN police with the help of Kerala police have so far arrested
six people allegedly linked to the bomb blasts in Tamil Nadu.
They included Ooma Babu and Abdul Nasser Madani. The police on
Wednesday searched Madani's headquarters in Kollam. While no arms
and ammunition were seized from his building, some records and
photographs have been detected. One of the photographs closely
resembled a man wanted in the Coimbatore blasts, it is said.
Although Mr Nayanar has said twice in the state Assembly last
year that five religious extremist organisations were identified
which received funds from some Gulf countries, the government
initiated no steps to curb their activities.
