The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unearthed a massive
ancient image of Lord Ram in course of excavation at this
archaeological site, 110 km away from the state capital,
Agartala.
The black stone sculpture, 10 feet high, 5.5 feet wide and 1.5
feet thick, was believed to have been brought to this part of the
country from the Chittagong hills in the neighbouring Bangladesh
dating the pal era.
Pilak was a bastion of Buddhist culture during the eighth century
Pal era. The historic site has a number of stupas having
inscriptions in Hindu and buddhist idioms.
Visiting newsmen saw a number of rock images and terracotta
plates lying scattered in the area. Exposed to the vagaries of
weather these historical objects have withstood the decay of
time. The terracotta images, which mirror a unique and glorious
cultural past of Tripura, would go into oblivion, if proper care
was not taken to preserve them a local resident said.
The ASI which began excavation in 1984/85, had brought to light
the ruins of a brick temple with a standing image of sun god. But
the work. was discontinued because of funds crunch.
