Few will doubt that the thumping BJP victory sit Patna by an
unexpectedly large margin of over 52,000 votes was substantially
due to the better security arrangements during the re-poll for
this prestigious Lok Sabha seat on March 30.
Public disgust with the Laloo Rabri regime alone could not have
accounted for the win. For the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal would
almost certainly have grabbed the seat had the rigged ballots of
the February 16 election been counted. Not surprisingly Laloo
Yadav, the de facto CM, is believed to have summoned all
thanedars on Thursday morning for a dressing down. An otherwise
subservient system dearly let him down.
What needs to he emphasised is that the BJP victory was
essentially the party's, not of its prosperous candidate C.P.
Thakur. The BJP's success in forming the government at the Centre
coupled with the smooth passage of the confidence motion were
decisive factors.
sharpened the anti-RJD appetite of the Patna voter. In fact if
the fortunes of the Patna seat were to have been decided on the
basis of the personal popularity of the candidates, the RJD
nominee, Ram Kripal Yadav (the sitting MP), would have won hands
down.
