The Left is not interested in the BJP-led government falling
immediately as it realises that the Congress is in a state of
flux and the United Front (UF) is in poor shape.

Both CPI and CPI(M) leadership feel that it would not
particularly benefit the Congress, which is the midst of finding
its bearings' under a still-reclusive Ms Sonia Gandhi, if the
saffron-tinted coalition fell very soon. Nor would it benefit the
UF, which still has to take new shape, say sources in the CPI(M)
and CPI.

However, Left leaders say that if the government collapse due to
its internal contradictions, then they would have 'no
alternative' but to ensure a 'secular government is formed at
the Centre as the country needs a government.

Left leaders say that the BJP-led government is etting exposed
due to infighting and public mud-slinging and 'blatant
appeasement' of corruption.

Yet, sources in the CPI and CPI(M) do not think the government's
collapse is around the corner as the BJP orruption appeasing
skills are of high order.

Further, despite Marxist tactician Harkishen Singh Surjeet now
(in) famous statements in March 1998, neither the CPI(M) nor the
CPI are in any hurry to support a congress-led government at this
juncture, especially when there is a 'mist of confusion'
surrounding 'he internal affairs of the 'grand old party

"The Congress is not ready to take the reins of power as yet. Ms
Sonia Gandhi would like to settle scores within her own party
first and weaken other Power centres. So, the BJP-led government
will continue unhindered for some more months at least, unless
the in- fighting within the coalition becomes uncontrollable,"
said a CPI(M) leader.

The hazy Picture surrounding the Congress and the UF is
resulting in the Left taking a wait-and-watch policy while
actively Opposing the 'anti-people', 'anti-secular' moves of the
BJP-led government.

However, there is an undercurrent of concern in the Left is that
the longer the Hindutva Party is in power, it would fill posts
with its men, especially from the RSS, which would be a anger
to India's democratic and secular fabric.

"But what can we do at the moment. We have to wait and see how
long this government continues. At the moment, its performance
has shown that the Promise of stability and ability has been
totally hol- low," said a senior CPI leader.
