Militant Islamic fundamentalism manifested itself in its crude
form in London when Al-Muhajiroun, a UK-based organisation held a
demonstration in Trafalgar Square. Prior to the rally, thousands
of leaflets with Shri A.B. Vajpayee's photographs and slogans :
"Wanted for crimes against the Muslim people" were seen on lamp
posts. These leaflets and other anti-India literature were also
distributed at the rally by a band of young Muslim volunteers
mostly of Pakistan origin. We here publish an eyewitness account
of the same by Shri Krishan Dutt, a UK-based journalist :
Islamic fundamentalists were shouting anti-India-slogans and
declared jihad against India and other non-Islamic faiths.
I approached public order section of the Home Office and the anti-
terrorists squad of Scotland Yard demanding why such a rally
which openly promoted terrorism against a democratic state,
India, had been allowed to take place right in the heart of
London.
Al-Muhajiroun was founded by Syrian Islamic fundamentalist Sheikh
Omar Bakri in 1996 with the sole aim of converting young British
Muslims to militant Islam.
Bakri had in an interview to a British newspaper in November 1995
said, "One day I believe Islam will take our Britain". In the
same interview he remarked that "I do not accept the law of the
(British) Prime Minister or the Queen=94. It is surprising how
this notorious man who is promoting terrorism is allowed to move
freely on the streets of London.
At the rally, Mohammed Shareef, the main speaker, opened his
fiery speech by bitterly accusing India of grabbing Kashmir
"which had a majority of Muslim population=94. Screaming into the
microphone, he said, "The Shaitaan (devil) had occupied the land
of Muslims-and only the Islamic jihad could free our brethren
>from the evil Hindu rule." The Islamic guards raised their fists
and vociferously shouted Islamic slogans.
"Look what is happening in Kashmir, our Muslim brothers and
sisters are being tortured by Indian soldiers. Our women are
being raped day and night. Muslim schools have been destroyed or
closed and Muslim children intimidated by the Hindu aggressor,"
bellowed Shareef. The speaker then said, "I ask Pakistani Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif "why cannot the army of Pakistan move into
'India-occupied Kashmir' to help our suffering brethren"?
Lamenting the occupation of Kashmir by non-Islamic people,
Shareef said, "The kaffir are m control of Kashmir when Islam
should have been in overall command in Kashmir. We Muslims have a
responsibility to take up arms and fight the Indian invaders. In
the Holy Quran it is said that Muslims should fight for the
oppressed Muslims in non-Muslim lands".
"We must also remember that it is not only Kashmir which has to
be liberated but India also needs to be liberated from the Hindu
menace. I, therefore, call upon all Muslims of the world to come
forth as brave soldiers of Islam to take our jihad right up to
the borders of India=94, he said.
He further stated, "Vajpayee's zullm (tyranny) in Kashmir would
never be forgotten or forgiven, and the Muslim's suffering would
be avenged by us".
Referring to the ordeal of Muslims in Israel, Kosovo (Albanian
enclave in Yugoslavia), and Chechaniya (Russia), the speaker
lambasted these countries for their anti-Muslim crusade.
Concluding his vitriolic rhetoric Mohammed Sharif said, "Muslims
should send the Christians, Jews and Hindus to hell-kill the
kafirs for the glory of Islam=94!
